CPU, RAM and storage: comparing VPS plans

Choose resources based on application requirements and measured workloads.

01

Processor and memory

CPU supports computation; RAM supports processes, caches and databases. Start with software requirements and leave reasonable headroom. vCPU count does not guarantee a particular performance level.

02

Storage and backups

Compare both storage capacity and type. Allow for logs and data growth. Keep backups separately from the main server and test restoration.

03

Validate by testing

A representative workload matters more than a universal recommendation. Test latency, memory consumption and disk operations with your application’s typical load.

01

Measure workloads before upgrading

Collect metrics during normal operation and peak periods. High CPU utilization, insufficient memory and disk I/O waits require different solutions. More RAM may help a database cache, but it will not by itself accelerate a poorly parallelized compute task.

Record baseline metrics, change one factor at a time and repeat tests under comparable load. Allow for database growth, backup duration and update space. This approach selects plans based on observed limitations rather than the largest number in a table.
