How to choose a server location

Geography is a starting point, not the only criterion.

01

Start with your audience

Identify where users and connected external systems are located. A distributed audience may need multiple regions.

02

Check network routes

Physical distance is not latency. Before actual deployment, request a test IP, inspect routes and measure from your users’ networks.

03

Consider data requirements

Review your project’s data storage and transfer requirements. Facility terms and jurisdiction should match your needs.

Understand the details before choosing a server

01

Shortlist locations and compare equivalent conditions

Identify your main user regions and dependencies such as payment APIs, email, databases or storage. Shortlist several possible locations. Compare them from the same networks, at similar times and using the same protocol: a single ping does not measure application loading speed.

Evaluate latency distribution and connection stability, not just the best result. When a database sits in another region, each sequential query adds network latency. Keeping related components near one another can matter more than distance to an individual user.
